Crime Stoppers Youth Challenge 2010

Can you meet the Challenge?

The Crime Stoppers Youth Challenge is an award-winning education program examining crime in the community. The program is an inquiry-based competition for students in years 5 to 10 in all Tasmanian schools.

Students can work as individuals or in groups to explore their connections with the community, their own beliefs, the motivations of others, and to design practical solutions to assist in reducing crime.

A different Tasmanian crime trend is explored each year. This is the eighth year of the Crimestoppers Youth Challenge.

The 2010 theme is E-Safety or Electronic Safety

Why this topic?

E-safety stands for electronic safety. It is not just about keeping safe on the internet but also keeping safe on all electronic devices such as mobile phones. The internet is a place for children to play, explore and research. However, through the internet, children can also be:

  • exposed to inappropriate, offensive or illegal websites and content including scams
  • vulnerable in chat rooms, as they could develop inappropriate online relationships with other users
  • at risk by giving away personal information online
  • vulnerable to addiction to online games/gambling.
  • risk becoming a bully, often not realising that what is said online or via a mobile device should be no different to what you are prepared to say to someone’s face.

Crime Stoppers invites your school to participate in this year’s Challenge to assist in identifying and addressing many of the issues linked to e-safety and examining the role of Crimestoppers in addressing Electronic Safety.

The 2010 Crime Stoppers Youth Challenge Tasmanian topic E-Safety was adopted by Crime Stoppers following consultation with the Tasmanian Department of Education, Tasmania Police and the Board of Crime Stoppers
Tasmania.
